Code of Conduct

How we treat every person who walks through our doors

Melvin & Torrone, PLLP serves clients during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Whether navigating a divorce, fighting criminal charges, or seeking protection from domestic violence, our clients deserve an environment built on dignity, respect, and safety. This Code of Conduct reflects the standards we hold ourselves to in every interaction.

Respect for All Clients

Every person who contacts our firm is treated with courtesy and professionalism. We listen without judgment, communicate with clarity, and honor the trust our clients place in us. This standard applies to every member of our team, from partners to administrative staff.

Non-Discrimination

Melvin & Torrone, PLLP provides legal services without discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, marital status, veteran status, immigration status, or any other protected characteristic under federal, state, or local law.

We are committed to equal access to justice and believe that competent legal representation is a right, not a privilege reserved for any particular group.

Client Dignity

Legal matters in family law and criminal defense often involve deeply personal and sensitive circumstances. We respect the dignity of every client by:

  • Conducting all discussions in private, confidential settings
  • Using respectful language in all communications
  • Allowing clients to share their stories at their own pace
  • Explaining legal processes and options without condescension
  • Honoring client decisions regarding their own cases

Cultural Sensitivity

The South Puget Sound region is home to diverse communities with varying cultural backgrounds, languages, and traditions. We strive to understand and respect the cultural contexts that shape our clients' experiences. When language barriers exist, we work to provide interpretation services so that every client can fully participate in their legal representation.

Trauma-Informed Approach

Many of our clients come to us during or after traumatic experiences. Domestic violence survivors, individuals facing criminal charges, parents in custody disputes, and families dealing with CPS involvement often carry significant emotional weight. Our team is trained to:

  • Recognize the signs and effects of trauma
  • Create a safe and welcoming environment in our office and communications
  • Avoid re-traumatization through insensitive questioning or procedures
  • Provide referrals to counseling and support services when appropriate
  • Respect client boundaries and comfort levels during consultations and case preparation
  • Exercise patience when clients need time to process information or make decisions

Accessibility

We are committed to making our legal services accessible to all individuals. This includes:

  • Maintaining a physically accessible office space
  • Offering consultations by phone or video when in-person meetings are not feasible
  • Providing written materials in clear, understandable language
  • Accommodating scheduling needs related to work, childcare, or other obligations
  • Working with clients to find reasonable payment arrangements

Internal Standards

This Code of Conduct applies to all employees, attorneys, paralegals, and staff at Melvin & Torrone, PLLP. Team members are expected to:

  • Treat colleagues with the same respect extended to clients
  • Report any conduct that falls below these standards
  • Participate in ongoing training on diversity, cultural competence, and trauma-informed practices
  • Uphold the firm's reputation through professional conduct in and out of the office

If you have experienced or witnessed conduct that does not meet the standards described in this Code, we encourage you to contact us directly. We take all concerns seriously and will address them promptly and confidentially.
